The family of an armoured car guard gunned down on the job in Edmonton earlier this month has issued a statement thanking the public for support on the eve of her funeral.
"This tragic time in our lives has been tempered by the amount of caring we have been shown," the family of Michelle Shegelski, 26, said in a statement released Monday.
"Michelle's husband Victor (Shegelski), parents Peter and Cheryl (Ernst), and our families would like to thank the people of Edmonton, High Level and all of Canada for the tremendous outpouring of support."
The family also thanked the paramedics and police who attended the scene of the shooting and "who have to deal with senseless violence in our communities on a daily basis."
Shegelski was one of four G4S armoured truck guards shot on June 15 while refilling bank machines at HUB Mall on the University of Alberta campus.
Eddie Rejano, 39, and Brian Ilesic, 35, also died, while Matthew Schuman survived and remains in hospital with critical head injuries.
Their co-worker, Travis Baumgartner, faces three charges of first-degree murder, one charge of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm in relation to the deadly shootings.
Shegelski's family says her death has forever changed their lives.
"She will live on in our memories forever," the statement said.
Shegelski's funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon in Edmonton.
In her obituary, she is described as a marksman, university graduate, novelist, triathlete and outdoors enthusiast.
