Over-heated cooking oil is being blamed for a house fire just north of downtown Wednesday night that killed three dogs and some other pets. The fire was under control in about 10 minutes.The fire was under control in about 10 minutes. (CBC)

The fire was confined to the main floor, but damage estimates are set at $200,000, plus $50,000 to contents.

Firefighters were called to the home at 93rd Street and 112th Avenue about 8:40 p.m.

Five adults and a newborn child manged to escape the fire, though the baby was treated for smoke inhalation.

Some pets weren't as lucky, said district chief John Bower.

Three dogs, three birds, a cat and a bearded dragon died while five cats are still unaccounted for.

The residents managed to carry some caged parrots to safety, while two dogs also escaped.

The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes.
