Nearly a hundred members of Occupy Edmonton protested in Churchill Square Sunday, calling for solidarity for student protesters in Quebec.
“I'm hoping with the momentum and the energy in Quebec it will inspire people not just in Alberta but Canada-wide to stand up and fight for the values of socialism,” said David Laing, one of the organizers of the event.
David Laing, one of the organizers of the rally, hopes the protests in Montreal will spark changes to post-secondary education in Alberta. (CBC)“Education is a right. And we will not give up the fight.”
For more than a month, hundreds of thousands of students and supporters have taken to the streets in Montreal, protesting the provincial government’s plan to raise tuition.
Student leaders and provincial officials will resume talks Monday afternoon.
Many at the Edmonton rally say, while the massive protests are confined to Quebec, they’re bringing attention to the costs faced by post-secondary students closer to home.
Mary Joyce, a former teacher, hopes the images of protests in Quebec will inspire Alberta to put more money into education.
“Our students are hugely in the red when they are done their education,” she said.
“They have huge debts here in Alberta, where everything is supposed to be paradise and everyone is supposed to have a job.”
Occupy Edmonton says it will continue to stage local protests until the situation in Quebec is resolved.
