Residents of the Bellavera Green condominiums in Leduc are hoping a newly-appointed receiver can bring the building up to code by the end of the month.
On Friday, a judge appointed receiver Ayre and Oxford to take over the building and make $1 million in repairs.
Jeremy Hockin, the lawyer for the Bellavera condo board, speaks to reporters outside the Edmonton courthouse on Friday. (CBC)Jeremy Hockin, the lawyer for the condo board, said the appointment of the receiver is a move in the right direction.
"I'm hopeful that the residents will look at today's developments in a positive way," Hockin said outside the Edmonton courthouse.
"A sign that there is now going to be certainly somebody under supervision of the court that is mandated to address the deficiencies that were in the fire chief's inspection and in the evacuation order."
Safety concerns prompted Leduc's fire chief to issue an evacuation order last week which would force 150 residents out of their homes by March 31.
The condo board is seeking a stay and an appeal of the evacuation order. Hockin hopes the Safety Code Council of Canada will hear the appeal by the end of the month.
