A man was killed Wednesday evening when he was run over by a pickup truck in the parking lot of a south Edmonton pub.

The death occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time after three men left the Great Canadian Brewhouse on Ellerslie Road.

Police said one man got into the driver's seat while two of his friends horsed around on the passenger side of the truck.

"For whatever reason, the driver put his vehicle in gear," said Sgt. Gary Lamont from the traffic section of Edmonton police. "Unfortunately one of the two other fellows was on the ground and the rear tire of the truck ran over him."

The man who was struck died at the scene.

Lamont says alcohol appears to be a factor.
