A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train in Leduc on Monday afternoon was wearing headphones while he was walking along the tracks, RCMP say.

The male youth was struck from behind by a southbound Canadian Pacific freight train around 3:30 p.m. near 50th Avenue and Black Gold Drive.

"Obviously, they would have made every effort they could to notify the individual they were approaching, but trains don't stop on a dime," said Const. Jodi Heidinger.

The pedestrian was alone and on the open tracks when he was struck by the train.

His age has not been released.
