A man was found dead in a rural home near Three Hills, Alta., after a standoff with RCMP and Calgary police.

RCMP in Three Hills say they got a call in the early hours of this morning, and sent emergency response teams to the house.

Upon investigation it was found the man had assaulted the homeowner and damaged property before barricading himself inside. RCMP said it was believed the man was armed and was a threat to police.

Three Hills RCMP secured the area around the property and blocked off highways to keep the public safe.

When they finally entered the home, the Calgary police tactical team found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sgt. Patrick Webb said the incident was not related to the shooting of two RCMP officers near Killam, Alta., and the ongoing search for an "armed and dangerous" suspect.
