More new businesses are set to open on Jasper Avenue over the next six months, including the first Edmonton outlet of a breakfast chain from British Columbia.

De Dutch plans to open in the street level of the Cambridge Building at 100th Street and Jasper Avenue in June.

Owner/operator Jeff Van Den Biggelar says the restaurant located there to be part of downtown revitalization.

"Jasper Ave. has been a little bit forgotten about and we just want to try and bring some more attention back to it," he said.

De Dutch has 21 locations throughout British Columbia. Company president Bill Waring says downtown Edmonton is a good place for the company to branch out.

"When we started looking at various locations throughout Edmonton, we were being sort of pushed over to the suburbs, if you will, or some of the outlying areas," he said.

"And I felt that it was important, at least with our first location in Edmonton, to be downtown, where the action is."

A hair training academy, salon and a blow-dry bar — a place that only washes, dries and styles customers' hair — will join De Dutch in the Cambridge Building.

Tony Ricci, who runs salons in downtown Edmonton and St. Albert, plans to open the new spots in April.

"I love downtown. I love the buzz that goes on," Ricci said. "I've been there 15 years and you can really feel the difference and it's changing."

Remedy Cafe, a restaurant known for its chai tea, will open its second Edmonton location early next month on the southeast corner of 103rd Street and Jasper Avenue.

Owner Zee Zaidi plans to stay open until 1 a.m. He doesn't believe people who tell him downtown is dead after 5 p.m

"If you open your door, you have customers," he said.

The three businesses join a number of others planning to open downtown over the next number of months.

Two businesses —a whisky bar and a 7-11 convenience store — will open soon in the newly revamped Confederation Building at Jasper Avenue and 104th Street.

The Mercer Warehouse at 104th Street and 104th Avenue will be home to a tavern, a floral shop, a coffee shop and a high-end furniture rental company once renovations are complete.
