Alberta's New Democrats were preparing the party for a provincial election as members met in Edmonton over the weekend.

The party is on track to win more seats when the province goes to the polls, said NDP Leader Brian Mason.

The conference is partly meant to help new candidates get ready for a provincial vote, which Premier Alison Redford has said will happen within a year.

"Good educational stuff on how to run campaigns, the things you do. But it's also talking about our message going forward to the people of Alberta," Mason said.

Mason added that the Progressive Conservatives have a head start, being the party in power, but he said he is pleased with his party's state of readiness.

"I think we're far ahead of all the opposition parties, and even the Conservatives, in the number of candidates we've identified and nominated," he said.
