A man died Thursday night after he was stabbed in a knife fight near the Edmonton Remand Centre downtown.

Two men were fighting at 105th avenue and 97th street, near the gazebo in Mary Burlie Park, after 9 p.m., said police.

When officers arrived they found one man about 30 years old suffering from what seemed to be stab wounds.

He died later in hospital.

The second man managed to get to hospital on his own, said Acting Inspector Regan James

"He suffered some substantial injuries," he said. "I wouldn't consider them life threatening. But he has been injured as well."

Investigators have not recovered a weapon, but they do have what they're calling a solid witness.

The stabbing is the city's 31st homicide of the year, the second this week.
