Michael Wayne Tunnicliffe, 26, who was known to police, was killed in northeast Edmonton near 45th Street and 157th Avenue Sunday night, said police.

John Heykants was in his garage around 10:20 p.m. when he saw a man lying on the road on his back.

The man got up and started walking towards the alley when he fell on his face, he said.

Victim seemed intoxicated

Heykants said he thought the man was intoxicated and went out to help.

The man seemed to have broken his nose when he hit the pavement and Heykants tried keeping him still until the ambulance arrived.

The man was able to get into the ambulance on his own with some help, he said.

'They told me he died. It was kind of a shock'—John Heykants, neighbour

"That was the last I saw of him and then a little bit after midnight police cruisers started showing up and they taped off the area.

"An officer came to the door and asked us if we'd seen anything," he said, "They told me he died.

"It was kind of a shock," Heykants said.

Man rented home on street

One neighbour identified the victim as a man named Mike who had been renting a house in the area with a friend for about eight months.

Byron Anthony said he only knew the man to speak with casually.

The man had rented the home next door to Anthony for a year before moving across the street.

The man was quiet and did not host any parties, he said.

"It's a little unnerving," said Anthony. "We've got kids in this area. My kids are usually out here playing."

Another neighbour reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot.

This is the city's 30th homicide of the year.
