A benefit concert held last Wednesday at the River Cree Casino raised more than $150,000 to help people who lost their homes in the Slave Lake wildfire.

One-third of the town was destroyed when the fire ripped through the northern Alberta town on May 15th.

The sold-out benefit concert featured Tom Jackson, George Canyon, Johnny Reid, One More Girl and other performers and was broadcast later on CBC Radio and Television.

Funds raised by the show went to the Canadian Red Cross.

Red Cross spokeswoman Nancy Beasley Hosker said response to the fundraising effort has been remarkable.

"We have more than $2.8 million to help the folks of Slave Lake get back on their feet and that's especially important for the people who have lost everything," she said.

The money will help people who are under-insured or who have no insurance, as well as aid those who are experienced other problems related to the fire.

The Red Cross expects to continue helping people in the community for at least two years.
