A police dog handler is facing assault charges after a 65-year-old man was attacked by a dog on a First Nations reserve northwest of Edmonton.
The RCMP say Cpl. Stephen Prior used excessive force when he released his police service dog on the man causing puncture wounds which required medical attention.
Prior was helping execute a search warrant at a home on the Frog Lake Reserve on May 29, 2010, said RCMP.
After the man filed a complaint with the RCMP, an independent RCMP senior investigator looked into the allegations and sent his conclusions to Alberta Justice.
Prior is charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon and will appear in St. Paul, Alta. court on June 23.
He has been re-assigned to administrative duties.
Prior has more than 10 years of service with the RCMP and more than five years in the Police Dog Service.
An RCMP internal Code of Conduct investigation has been ordered and will be completed after the criminal court process has ended.
Disciplinary actions could include written reprimand, up to 10 days forfeiture in pay, demotion or dismissal.
