An oil field worker has died and two others have been hospitalized following exposure to hydrogen sulphide gas in an oil field 250 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
Sgt. Jeff McBeth, the commander for Fox Creek RCMP, said his detachment received a call of distress from three oil workers at 8:40 p.m. MT Saturday night.
The three workers were conducting maintenance of a gas line off Highway 947 in a remote area south of Fox Creek.
Two of the workers were overcome by a leak of hydrogen sulphide gas. The third worker was further away, and sought help.
"The Fox Creek Fire Department responded immediately and with the assistance of breathing packs, were able to assist the two workers," McBeth said in a written release.
A Fox Creek RCMP officer who had been enforcing a roadblock some distance away was also exposed to the gas and was taken to hospital.
"Names of those involved will not be released at this time to allow their families time to deal with this unfortunate situation," McBeth said.
The Energy Resources Conservation Board, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, and the RCMP are investigating the incident.
