The city is planning to install a marked crosswalk where a woman was struck and killed earlier this month while walking her great-granddaughter to school.

The crosswalk and expanded sidewalk at St. Pius X elementary school is part of the neighbourhood rehabilitation program and was planned before the death of Bernice Jingling on April 7.

Jingling, 66, died in hospital after she was struck by a vehicle near the school at 128th Street and 122nd Avenue. Her six-year-old great-granddaughter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was later released from hospital.

Craig Walbaum, a traffic engineering director with the City of Edmonton, said the work should be done sometime this summer.

"It's difficult to nail down an exact day or time," he said. "What I can say is that the construction will be done this season, and before the end of that construction season, these changes are all expected to be in."

The crosswalk will have markings on the pavement as well as signage for motorists.

Jingling's death prompted calls from both school boards for the city to implement lower speed limits in residential areas, particularly around schools.
