No energy for Earth Hour in Edmonton

Efforts to produce a symbolic dip in energy use for one hour in Edmonton fizzled out Saturday night.
The city's power usage actually rose between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the hour people were supposed to turn off their lights to reduce electrical consumption.
Power usage rose by 1.01 per cent, compared with the same time a week earlier.
Organizers blame unseasonably cold temperatures — and people watching the CBC Hockey Night in Canada game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames.
About 170 people showed up at city hall on Saturday night for Earth Hour celebrations which preceded turning off the lights.
Calgary saw a minor decrease in energy consumption between 8:30 and 9:30 Saturday night, but electricity officials would not attribute the drop to a conscious effort to cut back usage.
