RCMP killed a man in Fort McMurray, Alta. during an exchange of gunfire early Wednesday inside an apartment building, police said.
An officer was shot in the abdomen. She was taken to hospital and is now listed in stable condition.
Police said someone called 911 at 3:30 a.m. about a man wielding a handgun inside an apartment building.
ASIRT's Cliff Purvis talks with media Wednesday about a police shootout in Fort McMurray. CBCAs soon as the three responding officers entered the hallway of the apartment building, the shooting erupted, said Cliff Purvis, executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
Numerous shots were fired, said Purvis. One officer was hit and a male suspect was killed.
The identity of the man is not yet known. The officer who shot him was not injured.
The wounded officer had 10 months of service with the RCMP, Purvis said. The senior officer on the scene has been with the RCMP for five years.
The remaining officer has been on the job for two years, he said.
The investigation has been referred to ASIRT, which investigates incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.
