A man has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a body after human remains were found in a rural area 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, RCMP said Saturday.
A Wandering River, Alta. man is charged with murder. The remains, discovered on Friday, are believed to be those of Roxanne Bigelow, 34, police said.
Her common-law husband, Trevor Bobocel, 38, has been charged in her death.
In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, Alberta RCMP said that positive identification of the remains is pending and an autopsy will be conducted next week.
Alberta RCMP said that both Bigelow and Bobocel are from Wandering River, Alta.
RCMP in Lac La Biche were alerted to a "suspicious occurrence," through a call received at 8:00 a.m. MT on Friday, a statement from the detachment said.
"Police attended the location and began an investigation. Police located some remains which are believed to be human," the statement said.
Early Saturday afternoon, RCMP spokesman Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said a man had been arrested near the scene.
"I can confirm to you that the male in Lac La Biche was taken into custody near a burning car," Taniguchi said.
Taniguchi said that it was difficult at first for police to determine whether the remains at the site were human because they were found "in such a state."
However, he clarified, the remains were not burnt.
Officers from the major crimes and forensic identification units teamed up with the Lac La Biche detachment in the investigation, which continues.
Bobocel is set to appear in Lac La Biche provincial court at 10:00 a.m. MT on Monday.
