Two men died after they were electrocuted in a farm accident in the area of Ellerslie Road and Meridian Street.

Emergency crews found the men, aged 62 and 54, on the ground at about 3:30 a.m. Friday. The two were already dead.

Police said the men were moving a grain auger from a grain truck Thursday night, when it came in contact with live overhead wires. .

Another farmer in the area called police early Friday morning. Police have notified immediate family members of the two men.

The deaths of the workers shows Alberta needs to change its workplace safety laws to include agricultural workers, according to Gil McGowan from the Alberta Federation of Labour.

"From our perspective, this is a relic of the past. It's a black eye for Alberta. It's an embarrassment and frankly, that needs to be fixed," he said.

"Until it does, our farm workers will still continue to be second-class citizens in this province when it comes to workplace rights and they'll be exposed to much more dangerous workplaces than they need to be."
