The Edmonton Oilers are waging a phone blitz for support of the proposed downtown arena.

Over the past three days, the team has called 300,000 homes.

An automated message from president Patrick Laforge asks respondents to press one if they support the arena and two if they do not.

If they support the project, they then receive a call encouraging them to fill out a survey on the City of Edmonton website.

"I think it's really important if there's a public consultation process, I think the public should be prompted to be involved in it," said Oilers spokesman Alan Watt. "Far too often, people just sit on the sidelines and then complain about the process. .

Watt says the Oilers have no plans to release results of their phone call-out.

Team owner Daryl Katz is willing to chip in a $100 million for the arena and another $100 million towards an entertainment district.

It's not clear where the remaining money for the $400 million project will come from.

The calls came just as the city wrapped up its final public meeting on the arena proposal Wednesday night.
