(RCMP)The number of people who died in a two-vehicle crash near near Valleyview, Alta. Sunday morning still needs to be determined, RCMP said Monday.

The crash and subsequent fire early Sunday morning were so severe Valleyview RCMP have been unable to identify the make of one of the vehicles or confirm the number of people who were in it.

Police said it appeared a five-tonne van and another vehicle collided on Highway 43 at Range Road 253, 30 kilometres west of Valleyview, just before 7 a.m. MT. Valleyview is 111 km east of Grande Prairie.

The male occupant of the van — a 33-year-old man from Hinton — was not injured in the crash.

Police believe the second vehicle, which was heading westbound on Highway 43, crossed the centre line and collided with the van.

The van rolled onto the passenger side and the second vehicle rolled sideways on the eastbound lane.

Anyone with information, especially motorists who may have been in the area at the time, is asked to contact the Valleyview RCMP detachment.
