In April, Edmonton agreed to spend $100,000 to find ways to reduce problems caused by the concentration of bars and nightclubs along Jasper Avenue.
(CBC)A city council committee has recommended city staff come up with ways to control noise and reduce violence along Jasper Ave.
The decision of council's executive committee comes on the heels of a report prepared by the Jasper Avenue Entertainment Working Group, which includes among its recommendations, a proposal to keep bars along the strip open an additional two hours.
Last call would still be at 2 a.m., but the later closing time could prevent crowds of people spilling on to the street at the same time. However, extended bar hours would require provincial approval.
The report also suggests setting up a late night transportation system with taxis and specialized bus routes, as well as dedicating an "Entertainment Zone" police unit to both Jasper and Whyte Avenues.
The report will go to city council next week when councillors will decide whether to have officials report back in February with a plan for implementing the proposals.
