An Alberta man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father, the RCMP said Saturday.
The charge was laid Friday against Matthew Crichton, 27, of Grovedale after Mounties from the Grande Prairie detachment were called to the home he shared with his father, Alex Crichton, 73, near noon Friday.
The accused was arrested without incident after police discovered his father's body.
Grovedale is about 480 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
After a judicial interim release hearing, Crichton was remanded until his appearance in Grande Prairie provincial court Wednesday.
Investigators from the forensic identification section, Edmonton major crimes and general-duty police officers are continuing to gather evidence at the rural residence, the RCMP release said.
The medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death.
The victims' assistance service and a local RCMP officer appointed as a family liaison are providing support to the family, the Mounties said.
