Gail and Stan Knapp won $16 million in the June 30 Lotto 6/49 draw. (Western Canada Lottery Corp.) One of Mayerthorpe, Alta.'s worst-kept secrets was revealed Thursday when Gail and Stan Knapp were officially announced as the winners of the $16-million jackpot in the June 30 Lotto 6/49 draw.
The fact the Knapps had won the jackpot was widely known for more than a week in this town of nearly 1,500 people, about 130 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. But the announcement wasn't made by lottery officials until Thursday.
The win was the result of a mixup by a clerk at the Medicine Bottle Rexall Drug Store in Mayerthorpe.
Stan Knapp wanted a Lotto Max ticket, but the clerk didn't hear him correctly and gave him a Lotto 6/49 ticket by mistake. After getting the Lotto Max ticket he asked for, Knapp decided to buy the Lotto 6/49 ticket as well.
Knapp didn't know he'd won the jackpot until he checked his numbers at the drugstore on July 3.
The Knapps recently retired from farming and Gail Knapp recently quit her other job.
The couple plan to pay bills, help their family and buy a new sink for the main bathroom in their 31-year-old home.
