An Edmonton woman has pleaded guilty to careless driving in a crash that killed a teen landscaper in July 2009.

Taryn Crawford, 25, entered the plea in Edmonton provincial court on Thursday.

Sefatullah Khanzadeh, 18, was killed when he was picking up traffic cones behind a truck near 97th Street and 144th Avenue in north Edmonton on July 24, 2009. He was a seasonal employee with LandTec Landscape Contractors Ltd.

The court was told that at least four drivers of other vehicles saw the cones on the road and moved to the other lane.

But Crawford's Honda Civic ran into the back of the truck and pinned the teenager. He died at the scene.

According to an Alberta Occupational Health and Safety fatality report released in February, one witness saw the driver texting on her cellphone as soon as she got out of her car.

That information was not presented in court on Thursday.

Crawford will be sentenced on Tuesday. She faces a maximum penalty of a $2,000 fine, six months in jail or both.

The matter was adjourned until then so the victim's family could be in court. Khanzadeh had come to Canada from Afghanistan with his mother several years before his death.
