Edmontonians will have a chance Monday to offer ideas on what should be done with derelict, contaminated gas station sites in the city.

There are 50 "brownfield" sites throughout Edmonton, including ones on Jasper and Whyte Avenues.

Councillor Ben Henderson told CBC News the city has been working on a plan since January on how to deal with them, and now are looking to residents for input.

"The whole idea of how we deal with brownfield sites and remediation of brownfield sites is a very big and difficult question," Henderson said.

"The major thing for us is we don't want to see these sites continue to be derelict or empty in the middle of neighbourhoods for instance that may be trying to revitalize or commercial streets that are trying to get things happening. There are no easy answers...we are looking at all the possibilities."

The public meeting will be held between 3 and 5:30 p.m. at city hall's River Valley Room.
