Van Morrison will headline the Wednesday night opener to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in August, organizers announced Monday.

The Grammy-winning blues and soul star will play the concert Aug. 4 to raise money for the festival's endowment fund.

The fundraiser occurs the day before the official Thursday night start of Folk Festival and is considered a separate event not covered by festival passes. Last year, Sarah McLachlan headlined the event.

People who buy four-day passes can buy tickets for Van Morrison at a discounted price of $69. Passes go on sale Tuesday.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday at a cost of $89 for adults.
