A woman whose Rottweiler bit a young girl's face in Grande Prairie, Alta., has been charged under municipal bylaws.

The 28-year-old woman was with her two Rottweilers at a baseball game Monday night at the South Bear Creek baseball diamonds.

Three-year-old Caidynce King was also at the diamonds with her family but wandered away and "ended up coming behind these two dogs," said Gord McMahon, a peace officer with City of Grande Prairie.

When the child fell on top of the larger dog, it turned and bit her, McMahon said.

The girl was taken to hospital in Grande Prairie and then airlifted to hospital in Edmonton.

She required 150 stitches to repair her face.

The dog's owner has been charged with having an animal that "bites, attacks or injures a person." The violation carries a fine between $200 and $2,500.

The woman is set to appear in court June 22.

The dog that bit the girl remains in quarantine at the SPCA, but is expected to be released next week. McMahon told CBC News Thursday that the dog would not be destroyed.
