Some residents living near the hamlet of Opal, Alta., have evacuated their homes as an out -of-control brush fire burnt nearby Wednesday.

Fire crews from Thorhild County were called to an area three kilometres northwest of the small community around 1 p.m. MT.

Firefighters continued to battle the fire at 5 p.m. MT with the support from other surrounding fire departments and water bombers from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.

Smoke in the area hampered visibility, although no highways in the area had been closed by Wednesday afternoon.

There were no reports of injuries or loss of property.

Opal is located about 60 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
