CN says the safety systems at the Edmonton railway crossing where a man and his two daughters were killed Tuesday appear to have been working properly.

John Baxter was driving his daughters, Julianne Rose, 9, and Coral Sky, 7, to Winterburn School when his pickup truck was hit by a Via Rail passenger train.

CN spokesman Jim Feeny said Wednesday that bells and the train crossing arm have all been tested and were functioning properly.

He said there were also other indications that the safety equipment was working.

"[There were] reports from eyewitnesses, by eyewitnesses … on the road, but also we have spoken with the train crew. Indications are that it was … functioning," Feeny said.

He said a more detailed investigation will be done.

In the meantime, counsellors are at the girls' school and will be speaking with students, teachers and parents who need help dealing with the tragedy.

It's still not clear if the snow squalls in the area were a factor in the accident.

The train was carrying 227 passengers and 26 crew members to Vancouver from Toronto.

It sustained slight damage, but was allowed to continue on its way at about 1 p.m., said Via Rail spokeswoman Catherine Kaloutsky.

Via Rail will examine data from an on-board data recorder when the train arrives into Jasper, Kaloutsky said.

The three victims are survived by Baxter's wife, Alana, and a son, John Jr., aged 2½.
