Gloria Antipan of Edmonton spent 12 nerve-racking hours on the phone and online before learning her parents in Chile were alive.

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, rocked central Chile on Friday night. Authorities said Saturday more than 200 people were dead, and bridges and highways had been torn apart.

Antipan eventually reached a cousin on MSN Messenger, who confirmed her parents were alive. Still, she remained worried.

"Until I can actually speak to my dad or my mom, it's still I'm glad they're OK, but I just need to know like really what else happened. Like, is everything OK? Like, I don't know, did something happen to the house? Do we need to send money?" Antipan said.

In Calgary, the Samaritan's Purse Christian aid agency is collecting donations to send relief kits that take care of basic needs, and to send an emergency response team from nearby Bolivia.
