A new safety campaign is encouraging people to look in their workplace for hazards that might injure or even kill emergency responders. (CBC)A new safety campaign is encouraging people to look in their workplace for hazards that might injure or even kill emergency responders.
The campaign, "Put Yourself in Our Boots" reminds people that for police, firefighters and paramedics — their workplace is everybody's workplace.
Maryanne Pope's husband John Petropoulos was a Calgary police officer who died on the job. Ten years ago, he was investigating an alarm at a warehouse when he fell through a false ceiling. There was no safety rail in place.
Pope said employers and workers need to be aware that emergency personnel could be called into their workplace at any time. "People don't understand that they're going in after hours and of course the premises would look very different," she said.
The "Put Yourself in Our Boots" website shows dramatized videos of police, firefighters and ambulance personnel responding to emergencies where potential injuries can occur.
