Both elevators in the Summit Square highrise in Leduc are expected to be back in service soon — great news for the building's senior residents. (CBC)Seniors living in a Leduc, Alta., apartment building could soon be riding the elevators again.
An order will be issued to ensure the elevators in the nine-storey Summit Square building, the tallest in the town, are working, the local fire Chief Ernie Polsom said after inspecting the building Thursday.
"We're actually going to be serving the building owners sub-group with an order under the Safety Codes Act to repair and or replace, [and] get the elevators back working the way they're supposed to be so they can serve the residents," Polsom said.
Several elderly residents, including some more than 90 years old, have difficulty using the stairs. One resident told a family member he felt "like a prisoner" in the building.
Polsom said the core safety systems, such as fire alarms and sprinklers, are in good shape, but the elevators are another story: One has not functioned since May 2007, and the second broke down two weeks ago.
Polsom expects to meet with the building owners Friday to discuss a time frame for repairing or replacing the elevators.
