Ellen Finn from the City of Edmonton unveils the main route the Olympic torch relay will take when it stops in the city on Jan. 13. (CBC)Edmonton runners will take the Olympic torch along a route that will include stops at the University of Alberta, the Alberta Legislature and Churchill Square when the relay passes through the city on Jan. 13, it was announced Wednesday

Torchbearers will start the relay at 4:12 p.m. at the intersection of Yellowhead Trail and St. Albert Trail for a short run of two to three kilometres.

The main part of the relay route will start around 5 p.m. at Hawrelak Park. The torch will be carried past the University of Alberta, go down Whyte Avenue, and then cross the Walterdale Bridge before stopping briefly at the legislature.

The final leg of the route will take the torch west to the Victoria Promenade, before heading back east along Jasper Avenue to its final stop in Churchill Square, where Olympian Doreen Ryan will light a community cauldron at around 7 p.m.

A concert will follow featuring musical acts Cadence Weapon, Asani and The Be Arthurs.

"There's about six celebration sites along the route, which will take place about 30 to 45 minutes in advance of the time that the torch will come there," said Ellen Finn, director of the city's civic events office.

The sites include the U of A Butterdome, End of Steel Park and the Alberta Legislature.

About 50 torchbearers are expected to take part in the Edmonton portion of the torch relay.

The cross-country Olympic torch relay started in Victoria on Oct. 30, headed east, with stops across the North, before heading west back to Vancouver for the start of the 2010 Winter Games on Feb. 12.
