A 55-year-old man is dead after being shot while hunting with friends, RCMP at Sylvan Lake, Alta., said Monday.
The incident occurred as four men were hunting deer in a heavily wooded field on land belonging to one of the hunters, about 140 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
One of the shooters took two shots at what he believed was a deer. He heard a strange noise and raced to the site to find his hunting partner shot in the abdomen, police said.
First aid and CPR were attempted with instructions from a 911 dispatcher, but the injured man was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Hunter's bullet strikes woman in home
In an unrelated incident 30 kilometres southwest of the first shooting, a 49-year-old woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries when struck by a bullet while sitting in her home.
Four hunters in a field adjacent to the woman's home shot twice at a deer Monday, and one of the bullets went through the wall of her house and struck the woman in the leg, RCMP said.
"It's unusual that we receive two of these calls within the last day," said Sgt. Duncan Babchuk, of the Sylvan Lake RCMP.
"These two calls, along with the severe weather problems today, they tap our resources immensely."
Charges are pending in both incidents.
