Dean Smith suffered facial fractures in the attack. (CBC)A teenage soccer player has been found guilty of aggravated assault in the beating of another player's father at an Edmonton minor soccer match in June 2008.
Manpreet Grewal, 19, was found guilty Friday by Justice Brian Burrows of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench in the attack on Dean Smith, which resulted in five facial fractures.
"I'm happy that there was some justice done in this case and I hope this sends a message to the young kids and the young adults out there," Smith told reporters outside the courthouse.
During Grewal's trial in September, the court heard the incident after a match between the La Perle and Meadows teams of the Edmonton Minor Soccer League on June 5, 2008.
Smith, the father of a La Perle player, testified that he was swarmed by several people and kicked while on the ground when a post-game argument with Meadows players escalated into a shouting match. Both sides traded insults, including Smith, who made a remark about a turban worn by one of the players.
During the trial, witnesses identified Grewal to police by pointing him out from players' photo cards, which the young man's lawyer argued should carry no weight in a court of law.
Grewal will be back in court for sentencing on Feb. 26.
Four other teens, all under age 18, were charged in the attack but those charges were later dropped.
After the attack, Smith had his mouth wired shut for two months and had a metal plate temporarily put in his head. He told reporters he doesn't expect to make a full recovery for another one to two years.
