Rates may increase at city's leisure facilities

Proposed rate changes to Edmonton's leisure centres could mean price increases for day passes, says a city report.
"We're adding three additional rec centres — downtown by Commonwealth Stadium, southeast and northeast — in the next three years and we are adding over half a billion dollars worth of sport and recreation facilities," Coun. Bryan Anderson told CBC News on Thursday. "This is simply a way to make sure that we offer people a variety of choices."
If the changes are approved, a Tier 1 day pass, which is good for all 13 facilities, would rise to $9 from $8 .
The recommended day-rate increase for the city's aquatic and fitness facilities is "based on optimum pricing levels and user feedback," said the report.
Additional changes include decreased monthly and annual fees, which would see them drop from $70 per month to $60.
According to the city, a number of Edmontonians are sitting on the fence when it comes to buying passes and officials hope less expensive user fees will mean more people signing up.
"This is not unlike a number of entertainment packages offered by a variety of providers where they give you a shopping basket and you can pick and choose singles, monthly passes, annual passes and try to tailor the annual passes to the kinds of facilities that you use," said Anderson.
The fee changes will be discussed on Monday by council's community services committee.
