A routine traffic stop on Highway 1, west of Lake Louise, resulted in the seizure of almost 70 kilograms of magic mushrooms, RCMP said Monday.

Officers stopped a Chevrolet Silverado on Thursday for an equipment violation. An investigation by officers and a drug-detection dog led to the seizure of 68 kilograms, or 150 pounds, of psilocybin mushrooms.

More commonly known as magic mushrooms, psilocybin mushrooms are an illegal hallucinogenic drug.

The seized drugs would yield up to $700,000 if sold at street value, according to the RCMP.

Police charged two Calgary men, aged 27 and 31, with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking in a controlled substance. Both were released on cash bail, pending a court date on Nov. 16.

RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb said the men were driving from B.C. and that at least some of the shipment was destined for Calgary.

"This kind of volume lends itself to believe that it could be just as a distribution point, it would actually move on further from here. So right now, it's impossible to say exactly where this was going to ultimately end up," said Webb.
