A 25-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the assault of a Spruce Grove man at the Co-op store in Boyle, Alta., RCMP said Tuesday evening.
Jesse James Larose, from Caslan, Alta., was charged in the death of Michael Joseph McCarthy, 49, who died from his injuries Sunday at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.
Larose turned himself into Edmonton Police at the north division at around 7:30 Monday night. Earlier that day, RCMP announced they had issued a warrant for his arrest in McCarthy's death.
Larose will make his first appearance in provincial court in Boyle on Sept. 8.
McCarthy was on his way home from work Friday evening when he stopped at the Co-op store in the town, which is 150 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. While he waited at the cash register, he was punched in the face and fell to the floor, police said.
When police arrived, they found McCarthy unconscious and bleeding badly from his nose and his mouth.
McCarthy was initially taken to hospital in Boyle with severe head injuries but then transferred to hospital in Edmonton after his condition got worse. He died Sunday morning.
"Obviously what occurred moments before the assault is a critical part to our investigation and we can't get into that," RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Darren Anderson said. "But what I can say is that we believe that the suspect and the victim did not know each other."
The attack was recorded on the store's video system and there were also eyewitnesses, Anderson said.
