Family and friends are grieving the loss of an Edmonton teen struck by a vehicle while working for the city Friday.

Safatulla Khanzadeh, 18, was working for a landscaping company hired by the City of Edmonton when it happened.

Police say he was working on a project on the median dividing the north- and southbound portions of 97 Street near 144 Avenue.

Khanzadeh was picking up pylons when a car struck him and a nearby truck, pinning him between the two vehicles.

Samad Rassuli, a leader in Edmonton's Afghan community and a close family friend, said Khanzadeh was the family's only son.

"I'm worried for his mom right now. I'm so much worried for his mom. I talked with his mom, it's almost — she's lost. It's shocking, like this, I can't talk. It's very hard to me."

Police say the driver of the car is in hospital with unknown injuries. They said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.

Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Department is also investigating because the death was a work-related fatality.
