An Edmonton man who had just finished watching Canada Day fireworks with his wife and two teenage daughters late Wednesday, witnessed a scuffle that ended in the death of one man.

A 42-year-old man was stabbed just as Robert Proudfoot was waiting to get on a bus at the transit centre at 100 Avenue and the Telus Centre downtown.

"While we were getting on the bus ... I saw two guys fighting … they were just beating each other," Proudfoot said Thursday.

"We had to stay on the bus for a couple of hours after the stabbing ... [police] took our witness statements, and they were looking around for weapons, " Proudfoot said Thursday.

While he didn't see the actual stabbing, one of his daughters did, Proudfoot said.

"He [the man] was bleeding profusely," he said. "My kids are quite upset,"

His family often travels downtown to take in various festivals and events, and this incident won't keep them from doing that, Proudfoot said. However, he said he does expect he'll be more watchful in the future.

"If you can't, you know, stand at a bus stop without being stabbed by somebody, then it means we just have to be a lot more wary and be looking out all the time," Proudfoot said.
