Edmonton's population grew by 30,000 last year, census shows

Edmonton gained 30,000 more residents between 2008 and 2009, with the bulk of the newcomers between the ages of 25 and 34, city officials announced Wednesday.
According to a city census, the population now sits at 782,439, up from 752,412 in the previous year.
The fact most newcomers were young adults led city officials to suggest work opportunities are bringing people to Edmonton.
"Those individuals are looking to build a future for themselves and we hope Edmonton is a place they can settle in and find a great future here," Mayor Stephen Mandel said.
City council decided to start conducting the municipal census on an annual basis last year.
The information was collected during the month of April by 1,300 workers who went door to door. Followup on missed properties was done in early May.
The city collected information using a short-form census with four questions. The next long-form census will take place in 2011.
