A medical condition may have contributed to a two-car collision that killed a 73-year-old woman on Sunday, Edmonton police said.

The woman was driving a Buick that entered the intersection of Roper Road and 51st Avenue at about 2 p.m.

As the Buick travelled north, it hit an eastbound Neon carrying two people, police said. The driver of the Neon attempted to avoid the collision, but hit the driver's side of the Buick. Both cars then spun into the westbound lanes, with the Buick coming to a stop in a vacant parking lot.

The driver of the Buick was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The people in the Neon received minor injuries.

An autopsy will be performed on the woman and investigators are looking at the possibility she may have had a medical condition that might have contributed to the crash.
