A man wanted in connection with a homicide in Edmonton was arrested in Calgary on Wednesday after police officers walking a beat in the downtown area observed him spitting on the ground.

"We have [a] by-law in Calgary prohibiting that," Calgary police Staff Sgt. Nina Vaughn said Thursday.

When the officers approached the man to warn him, he seemed agitated, nervous and evasive about giving his name, Vaughn said.

After running his name through police computers, officers discovered there was an outstanding warrant for the man's arrest.

Homicide detectives in Edmonton were contacted and they travelled to Calgary to interview him.

Joseph Sunchild Lagrelle, 23, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Quentin L'hirondelle.

L'hirondelle, 22, was stabbed in the chest Nov. 8 at a party in an apartment in downtown Edmonton. He died in hospital shortly thereafter. A number of other people at the party were injured.

Another man, 21, was charged with second-degree murder in November in relation to L'hirondelle's death. He also faces other assault and weapons charges.

Police also laid a number of assault and weapons charges against a third man, 22.
