The province is opening 20 new beds in Calgary and Edmonton to help young adults with addictions.

The beds will be at Calgary's Aventa Centre and the Poundmaker's Lodge near Edmonton, Health Minister Ron Liepart announced in Calgary on Friday.

"Twenty beds may not sound like a big number, but these 20 beds over the course of the year will help hundreds of young men and women," he said.

The additional beds will bring the number of government-funded spaces for addictions treatment to 342. Last year, there were 15,000 people treated at the province's 22 treatment centres.

"Those are facts. We're not proud of it, but what we are proud of is the fact that we are working towards treating those who have addictions," Liepart said.
