The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling Mengniu strawberry flavour sour milk because it contains melamine.
The CFIA said Wednesday that only milk distributed in Alberta and Saskatchewan is affected. The recalls covers Mengniu strawberry flavour sour milk in 250 ml containers with production date codes of 20071113/X and 20205//kcf and a UPC number of 6 923644 242930.
There have been no reported illnesses. The importer, Haofine International Trading Inc. of Edmonton, is voluntarily taking the product off shelves.
The recall is a part of the agency's ongoing investigation into milk and milk-derived products from China that may have been distributed in Canada. Melamine is a chemical compound used in a number of commercial and industrial applications and is banned as a food ingredient in Canada.
The agency began its investigation after a food safety crisis in China that started with melamine-tainted infant formula. Four babies died in that country and tens of thousands of children were sickened after drinking milk tainted with melamine.
Melamine has since been discovered in other milk products and has triggered recalls and bans on Chinese food products around the world.
