RCMP have released a sketch of a person they want to talk to following Saturday's slaying of a 14-year-old girl in Edson, Alta.

The composite sketch is not of a suspect but of someone "investigators want to speak with," police said in a release Monday afternoon.

"I must stress that this is not a suspect," said RCMP Cpl. Wayne Oakes.

Police are also asking the public for help. They want to speak to anyone who may have been on or near the pathway on which the girl was attacked or in the general area of Willshire Estates and Old Tiffin, between 17th and 18th avenues, on Saturday afternoon or evening.

Emily Stauffer was attacked by a man around 4:30 p.m. MT as she walked along a pathway in an area that borders residential properties and is lined by trees.

A police release says two youths "came upon the attack" and ran to a nearby house to call 911. Attempts to revive the girl at the scene were not successful.

She was taken to a hospital in Edson, where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has not been determined.

Oakes warned against anyone taking action on their own, reminding people that the person in the sketch is not a suspect.

"We don't want people going out and inflicting vigilante justice on anyone who may match this description," he said. "This is a person that we're interested in speaking with. So that's why we are addressing the issue of vigilante justice."

The RCMP Major Crimes Units from Edson and Peace River are being helped by investigators from the Major Crimes Unit in Edmonton, as well as officers from Hinton and Drayton Valley.

RCMP are also using a helicopter and dogs to search the area. Search and Rescue personnel from Brazeau County are also assisting in the search for a suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 30 years old, with brown hair. He was wearing a blue jacket and blue jeans.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the suspect in the area to contact Edson RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Edson, which has a population of about 8,000, is about 200 kilometres west of Edmonton.
