Former Alberta NDP leader Ray Martin, who was narrowly defeated in March's provincial election, will be seeking the federal NDP candidacy in Edmonton East.

Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton said Friday he hopes Martin will give the party a breakthrough in Alberta, where all federal seats are held by the Conservatives.

Martin, 66, led the Alberta NDP for eight years from 1984 to 1993 before returning to politics in 2004 as the MLA for Edmonton-Beverly-Claireview.

He was defeated in March when the Tories steamrolled into the Alberta legislature with 72 of 83 seats.

Conservative Peter Goldring has held the Edmonton East seat since 1997. Martin was unsuccessful in his bid for the riding in 2000.

Martin is a former teacher and school board trustee.

The NDP nomination meeting is expected in September.
