The SPCA has agreed to turn over 97 neglected and starving horses to a horse breeder east of Edmonton who has committed to raise money to save the animals.

Susan Fyfe, who runs Keno Hills Stable in Ardrossan, went on a mission to save the horses after she heard about the Arabians being seized from a ranch near Andrew, about 100 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said 27 horses died of neglect, while 100 others were rescued in late February.

Last weekend, an auctioneer was asked to prepare the surviving 97 horses for sale but Fyfe hounded the Alberta SPCA to give them to her instead.

On Tuesday afternoon, officials from the animal welfare group inspected her stables and agreed to hand over the horses to her as long as they're monitored.

Morris Airey, director of animal protection services, said he's confident Fyfe and the group she started, Rescue 100, will take good care of the animals.

Fyfe is now looking for donations and volunteers to help with nursing the horses back to health. She said she's already received calls from as far away as New York and Texas.

A veterinarian will examine the animals once they arrive at Fyfe's stables. When they are healthy again, the plan is to adopt them out to good homes.
