An Edmonton soldier was sentenced to three years in prison Monday for raping a young recruit, who is now being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.
Master Cpl. Orman Savage, 36, was convicted in August of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in a bathroom at a party after basic training three years ago.
The victim, now 24, said she's relieved at the closure the sentence brings. She said she's tried to commit suicide and is being treated for PTSD.
"I have forgiven him for what he's done, even if he won't admit what he has done," said the woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban. "And for something as large as that, he should have to pay for what he did."
Brian Beresh, Savage's lawyer, said they plan to appeal Monday's sentence.
"He was very disappointed and his family, as you can appreciate, is very disappointed with criminal justice system," he said outside court.
Savage, who is married and has two young sons, maintained his innocence through the trial. His wife, who was in court, refused to comment.
